"The objects found at Machu Picchu do not belong to us, but to the Peruvian government, which allowed us to take them from the country under the condition that they be returned,” said an excerpt from Bingham's letter. The pieces should've been returned in 18 months. Bingham sent this letter in November 1916 to Gilbert H. Grosvenor, director of the National Geographic Society.
Today, President Alan Garcia said Rafel Correa's government supports Peru’s attempt to recover Incan artifacts borrowed from Machu Picchu by Hiram Bingham since its discovery in 1911 to bring back with him to Yale university. According to the head of state, his Ecuadorian counterpart urged Yale to return the archaeological relics to Machu Picchu, which will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its discovery soon. "We have heard with satisfaction the statement of President Correa in support of Peru’s request to Yale and the world," he said from Loja, Ecuador, where the Fourth Binational Cabinet Meeting took place.
