High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton welcomed the development of the electoral process on April 10 and highlighted that the results will contribute to further strengthening democracy in Peru. “I welcome the smooth and peaceful conduct of the April 10 parliamentary elections and of the first round of the presidential elections,” said Ashton in an official statement. “I trust that the elections results will contribute to further strengthening democracy and social and economic development in Peru.” Moreover, she reiterated EU commitment to support democratic processes in the country and announced that an Electoral Observation Mission will follow the presidential runoff vote in June. “I am pleased to announce that the EU will deploy an Electoral Observation Mission for the second round of presidential elections to be held on June 5."
