The High Level Commission responsible for the organization of Machu Picchu’s centennial celebration announced the official program of activities to be carried out for this event, to take place from July 3 to 9 and which will be viewed by over 500 million people around the globe. Such activities aim to show the rest of the world the pride that Peruvians feel by having an architectural jewel such as the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. Celebrations begin on Sunday, July 3 with a parade in the city of Cusco. On July 6, authorities will award a group of distinguished Peruvians with the Inca Pachacutec medal, at Qoricancha temple. There will also be an exhibition of South American camelids in Sacsayhuaman fortress and a cocktail in the convent of Santo Domingo.
On Thursday 7, celebrations will start at 06:00 hours (11:00 GMT) with a gun salute in the city. Between 09:00 and 18:00 hours an Arts and Cultural Festival will take place at Regocijo, Espinar, San Francisco, San Blas, Santa Teresa, Los Pumas and the Main squares. The official salute to Machu Picchu will take place between 10:30 and 12:30 hours with the staging of the traditional Tinkay ceremony and a salute from the `Cuatro Suyos’. There will also be the staging of ‘Alturas de Machu Picchu’ made by the group Los Jaivas. A sound and light show has been scheduled in the same place between 18:00 and 20:00 hours which will have the participation of the Andean Orchestra and Cusco’s Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Cusco’s Main Square will celebrate from 18:00 hours until midnight with the event called “The party is in Cusco: concerts and live transmission of the sound and light show from Machu Picchu.” The program continues on Friday 8 with a dance contest, a float parade and music performed by the Andean Orchestra and Los Jaivas, as well as a fireworks spectacle in the Imperial City. Next day will feature a music festival held at Jardin de la Cerveza (Beer Garden). On the other hand, the commission launched a website that features written, graphic and visual information about the Inca Citadel. The head of the commission, Ricardo Vega, praised the groupwork being carried out by those who accompany him during his administration. “This is the only recipe that guarantees success.” “I have to make an honorable mention for the tremendous effort, collaboration and enthusiasm of Cusco’s authorities, who are always willing to work in favor of a cause that makes all Peruvians feel proud,” Vega stated. He also thanked the private sector saying that, “without their support it would be really difficult to prepare everything to celebrate the Year of Machu Picchu's Centennial to the World, proving that this sector is always ready to collaborate with the country.” Vega noted that the committee’s work is focused on promoting the values of the Inca culture “in order for the world to see that Peru is the birthplace of the most outstanding achievements.” Source: andina.pe |
