The families of the coalminers trapped underground in New Zealand by a gas explosion are "grief-stricken" but have drawn comfort from support flooding in from around the world, the local mayor said. Tony Kokshoorn, mayor of Grey District, said people living near the Pike River coal mine in Atarau, on New Zealand's South Island, had downed tools to do all they can to help the 29 workers, who are believed to include two Britons. There has been no contact with the men since they were trapped yesterday. "We briefed the families just a couple of hours ago down here," Kokshoorn said this morning. "We got them all together and they were all grief-stricken, as you can imagine. One of my councillors, he's down there. There was a young guy that just got the rugby league player of the region last week; he's down there. There's a local publican, real popular fellow; his son's down there. Source: googlenews.com |
