Lima, Sep. 19. Peruvian congress officially passed a law stating that the Machu Picchu – Santa Teresa – Santa Maria highway construction is of public necessity and priority national interest, and approved proposal to conduct studies at Santa Teresa - Mollepata road. The Law No. 29584 was published in El Peruano official gazette and signed by the Congress President Jorge Zumaeta.
The project of the Machu Picchu-Santa Teresa-Santa Maria highway was unanimously approved by the congress on September 9th. The highway will become an alternative route to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, currently accessible only by train or by a multi day hike on the Inca Trail. It will also avoid unfavourable climate events, such as January’s experience when heavy rains and landslides destroyed rail access to the 15th Century Inca ruin, the most visited site in Latin America. On that occasion, train access to Machu Picchu remained closed until April 1 for safety reasons while the restoration project was under way, resulting in lower tourist arrivals. Source: andina.pe
