Lima, Mar. Peru's copper production could 'easily' double over the next four years with the implementation of several planned projects, according to Deputy Mining Minister Fernando Gala. To date, Peru has a portfolio of copper mining projects amounting to US$12.9 billion to be implemented through 2014. Peru's current annual copper production is 1247249 tons. Gala said these upcoming projects will produce an additional 1.3 million tons, thereby doubling the country's copper output capacity. He noted that major investments include Antamina's US$1.1 billion expansion project and Xstrata Copper's US$1.5 billion Antapaccay copper project, which should come into operation in 2012.
