PERU’S DOMESTIC DEMAND EXPANDED 16.2% IN MAY, PRIVATE INVESTMENT GREW 25.4% Lima, Jul. 25. Peru’s domestic demand expanded 16.2 percent in May compared to same month in 2009, achieving an accumulated increase of 10.6 percent in January-May 2010, the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCR) reported Saturday. The domestic demand levels are similar to those seen before the global crisis, with a growth rate of 17 percent in September 2008.
According to BCR’s weekly report, private investment grew at two-digit rate in May (25.4 percent) for third month in a row. It also highlighted the greater dynamism of private consumption (5 percent). “These results are coherent with the GDP growth (9.2 percent) mainly buoyed by growth in non-primary sectors (11.8 percent)” states the report. The rate is almost equal to April’s (9.3 percent) and shows the improvement of Peruvian economy after recovering from a 1.2% drop witnessed in the second half of 2009. Obteined: andina.pe
