Roughly 15,000 tourists will visit Lamas, one of the oldest towns in the Peruvian jungle, situated in the San Martin department, in order to participate in the Via Crucis and other scheduled activities for Holy Week, Fernando del Castillo Tang, the Provincial Mayor said. “During Easter we host approximately 12,000 visitors, however in these holidays the numbers will increase due to the intensified promotion of Peru’s tourist attractions,” del Castillo told Andina. He added that visitors will arrive mainly from Tarapoto, in San Martin, Lambayeque, Cajamarca and Piura. Most of the visitors take advantage of the holidays to visit their relatives and to participate in the religious activities. This year, the traditional dramatization of the Passion and death of Christ will be held in the Wayku neighborhood by 120 young people. The Wayku neighborhood is populated by descendents of the fierce Chanca Indians, who maintain their traditional ancestral customs. Source: andina.pe
